| 裏面の説明 | The central device features a stylized Kaibauk, the traditional crescent-shaped ornament of Timorese culture, rendered in bold relief at the center of the field. The denomination numeral '5' appears prominently above the word 'centavos', together forming the value inscription below the Kaibauk device. The outer border is adorned with a continuous decorative pattern inspired by the Tais, the traditional woven textile of Timor-Leste, forming an ornamental ring around the entire reverse field. |

Timor-Leste's inaugural coin series, of which this is part, was issued following the country's formal independence on 20 May 2002 — the first new nation of the 21st century. The Central Bank was established that same year, and the decision to adopt the US dollar as official currency meant these centavo coins existed purely as fractional subdivision pieces with no corresponding paper equivalent, rendering them essential for small transactions from the outset.
