Ecuador's wartime switch to brass for this denomination was a direct consequence of nickel shortages driven by Allied military demand — the same pressure that forced dozens of Latin American mints to reformulate their alloy schedules between 1941 and 1945. The Philadelphia Mint struck these on contract, as Ecuador lacked domestic minting capacity.
The KM#75a designation distinguishes this brass composition from the earlier nickel-alloy predecessor, KM#75.
