Banco Nacional Ultramarino operated as the official note-issuing authority for Portuguese colonial territories, and S. Tiago — the largest of the Cape Verde islands — received its own distinct issue rather than a unified colonial series. The 1914 date places this note in the early years of the Portuguese First Republic, a period of administrative turbulence that complicated colonial financial management considerably.
Bradbury, Wilkinson produced clean, technically reliable work for numerous colonial issuers of this period. At 5 centavos, this is the lowest denomination of the series — small-change notes in colonial contexts typically suffered far higher attrition rates than higher values, making survivors proportionally scarce.
