Beschrijving keerzijde A finely detailed depiction of a Megaloceros giganteus — the giant Irish elk — is rendered in high relief at the centre of the field, shown in profile standing amidst a prehistoric landscape with rocky terrain. The animal's enormous palmate antlers dominate the upper portion of the design. The curved legend 'GIANTS OF THE ICE AGE' arcs along the upper left periphery, accompanied by a decorative border of small silhouetted prehistoric animals. The date '2019' is inscribed at the base of the design in the lower exergue.

Aanvullende informatie

The megaloceros — commonly misidentified as the "Irish elk" — went extinct roughly 7,700 years ago, its range spanning from Ireland to Siberia and as far south as North Africa. Ghana's choice of this prehistoric cervid for a bullion-adjacent commemorative is commercially driven rather than historically connected; the Bank of Ghana has issued a broad series of wildlife-themed silver rounds since the mid-2010s targeting the collector and investor market, most produced under license by European minting houses with little domestic circulation.
