The Gold-Girobank Schleswig-Holstein was one of dozens of regional private banking institutions that issued notgeld and token coinage during the hyperinflation crisis of 1923, when the Reichsmark collapsed so completely that local entities — banks, municipalities, even factories — were legally permitted to issue their own emergency currency. The Gutschriftsmarke designation marks this as a credit token rather than a coin in the strict sense, redeemable against account balances rather than tendered as general legal currency.
Aluminium was the pragmatic choice: it had negligible intrinsic value, was readily available, and couldn't be melted for profit the moment precious metal prices shifted.
