The 1959 Indonesian 5.000 Rupiah was issued during a period of acute monetary instability — the same year President Sukarno's government enacted a currency reform that abruptly halved the value of larger-denomination notes in circulation, a move that wiped out savings and deepened public distrust in paper currency.
