Obverse description The obverse is printed in shades of green and olive, centred around an intaglio portrait vignette of the poet and philosopher Antero de Quental (1842–1891), shown in three-quarter view against a guilloche underprint interspersed with stylised dove motifs. The issuer name BANCO DE PORTUGAL and the denomination 5000 / CINCO MIL ESCUDOS appear to the left, with the date LISBOA, 12 DE FEVEREIRO DE 1987 and two facsimile signatures of the Governor and Vice-Governor printed below the central vignette. The serial number in the upper right and lower left corners, along with the check number ch.2, complete the face design.

Reverse description The reverse is rendered in tones of green, centred on a large allegorical intaglio vignette of multiple human figures breaking free from chains, symbolising liberty and the end of oppression, set against a complex guilloche underprint with stylised decorative motifs. The denomination 5000 appears in each corner, with the issuer name BANCO DE PORTUGAL and CINCO MIL ESCUDOS / 5000 inscribed to the right. The overall composition reflects the graphic style associated with the post-Carnation Revolution commemorative series.
