Canada's $5,000 Dominion note of 1918 belongs to a series intended not for public hands but for large interbank settlements and government transfers. Denominations at this level rarely saw retail circulation — they moved between financial institutions and were cancelled and destroyed in high volumes, which is precisely why survivors are so few.
The American Bank Note Company printed this series at its New York facilities. ABNC held Canadian government printing contracts across several series during this period, a relationship that predates the establishment of the Bank of Canada by nearly two decades.
