| Obverse description | The obverse is printed in rose-pink and red tones on a light guilloche underprint. At upper centre, the heading PROVINCIA DE SALTA and the subtitle BONO DE CANCELACION DE DEUDA appear above the provincial coat of arms at left. A large vignette in the form of a stylised map of Salta province occupies the right portion, flanked by the denomination A∗5000 in bold numerals. Salta's provincial australes issues of 1991 were emergency quasi-money, printed after the national government's repeated failures to stabilize the austral had left provincial administrations unable to meet payroll. Several Argentine provinces resorted to issuing their own notes — called "patacones" or simply provincial bonds depending on the jurisdiction — during this period, spending instruments accepted locally but not recognized as legal tender by the Banco Central.
Casa de Moneda printed for several of these provincial emergency programs simultaneously, which creates attribution headaches: the printer's work was competent but the notes were politically fraught from the day they were signed.
