The Messamt für die Mustermessen in Leipzig — the trade fair authority responsible for organizing the Leipzig Sample Fair — was among the thousands of German municipal and commercial bodies that issued notgeld during the hyperinflation of 1923. By mid-1923, the Reichsbank's inability to supply adequate currency forced even trade institutions to print their own emergency money. The Leipzig fair retained real commercial significance throughout the period; the autumn 1923 Mustermesse opened while the mark was losing value by the hour.

C. G. Naumann, a long-established Leipzig printer, produced several notgeld issues for local issuers during this period, keeping production close and fast. At five million marks, this note was already a modest denomination by the standards of late 1923, when values escalated into the billions within weeks.
