Landkreis Crefeld — note the spelling discrepancy between the issuing authority and the district's contemporary German orthography, which shifted between "Crefeld" and "Krefeld" during this period — was one of hundreds of German municipal and county bodies that issued emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923. By August of that year, the Reichsmark had collapsed so completely that local authorities were printing denominations in the millions simply to cover wages and daily transactions. The five-million-Mark face value, astronomical by any peacetime standard, was routine tender within weeks of issue.
Schwarzkopf is credited as designer, almost certainly a local commercial artist rather than a specialist banknote engraver.
