The Hessische Landesbank issued this note in 1923 at the absolute peak of the Weimar hyperinflation, when the Reichsbank's printing capacity was so overwhelmed that regional banks, municipal authorities, and private firms were legally authorized — and effectively compelled — to produce their own emergency currency, known collectively as Notgeld. Five billion marks sounds extraordinary; by November 1923 it would barely cover a newspaper.
Local printing in Darmstadt was the norm for this series. Turnaround had to be fast — denominations became obsolete within days of issue.
