| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central crowned shield bearing the quartered royal arms of Scotland as Queen Mary I, struck in the hammered style characteristic of mid-sixteenth century Scottish coinage. The initial letter 'M' appears to the left of the shield and 'R' to the right, serving as the royal cypher for 'Maria Regina'. The crown above the shield is of the open imperial type, rendered with fleurs-de-lis and arched elements. The surrounding legend, interrupted by mullets or stops, runs in Gothic-influenced Latin characters along the coin's periphery, incorporating the date 1557. |
