To the left and right of the monogram are crowned crosses potent, each flanked by small crowned crosses, arranged symmetrically as secondary decorative and heraldic elements. The peripheral legend in Latin runs around the coin in a continuous band, punctuated by stops, with the date 1557 incorporated into the inscription. The overall design is characteristic of the Renaissance-influenced Scottish hammered gold coinage of Mary Queen of Scots. |
