Obverse description Central field occupied by the crowned Portuguese royal arms — the escutcheon bearing the quinas (five bezants in saltire) within a bordure of castles — surmounted by an elaborate royal crown rendered in high relief. The denomination '4000' appears to the left of the shield, and four stylised rosette ornaments are arranged vertically to the right. The peripheral legend, in bold Latin characters, encircles the design and identifies the sovereign. The overall composition is characteristic of the early milled coinage struck at the Vila Rica mint under João V.
