Obverse description Portrait of Sun Yat-sen set within a circular vignette at left, flanked by ornate guilloche cornerpieces bearing the denomination in Chinese characters. The central field carries large Chinese characters for the denomination against a fine guilloche underprint, with the bank title 中央銀行 across the top and two red seal impressions below the central inscription. Serial number printed in red appears twice across the upper portion of the note.

Reverse description The reverse is printed entirely in green, with a central rectangular panel bearing the large Chinese characters 肆佰圓 flanked by the numeral 400 on each side. Two vertical columns of Chinese text with signature inscriptions appear to the left and right of the central panel, all enclosed within an elaborate multi-layered guilloche border with floral corner ornaments.
