Vefa Spor Kulübü, founded in Istanbul's Vefa neighborhood in 1908, is among the oldest sports clubs in Turkey — its centennial falling precisely on the hundredth anniversary of the Republic's predecessor state, the Young Turk Revolution of July 1908. This commemorative was issued as part of a broader Turkish State Mint program marking centennials of clubs founded in that politically charged year.
Vefa never reached the top tier of Turkish football, but the club's century of survival in one of Istanbul's oldest quarters is the real story here.
