Ferdinand Charles was the last Gonzaga Duke of Mantua, and his reign ended in catastrophe. During the War of the Spanish Succession, he backed Louis XIV — a fatal miscalculation. Imperial forces seized Mantua in 1707, ending over three centuries of Gonzaga rule and extinguishing the duchy entirely. Coins struck under his name therefore span only the final years before that collapse, making any survivor a relic of a doomed administration rather than a functioning monetary system.
The CNI reference places this type at p.397, indicating relatively sparse documentation even within the series.
