背面描述 Central field features the Portuguese royal arms — a quartered shield bearing the quinas (five escutcheons in cross formation) and the bordure of castles — superimposed upon an armillary sphere composed of meridian and parallel bands, symbolising Portugal's maritime empire. The armillary sphere is depicted in fine relief with hatched shading. The circular legend 'PECUNIA TOTUM CIRCUMIT ORBEM' runs along the outer rim in Latin capital letters, separated by stops, with a small mintmark visible at the base.

附加信息

Portugal's mid-century colonial coinage for São Tomé and Príncipe was routinely sourced by countermarking existing stock rather than commissioning fresh strikes — a practical concession to the logistical difficulty of supplying remote Atlantic island territories. The small crown punch applied in 1854 reauthorized worn or surplus Portuguese metropolitan copper for continued local circulation, effectively extending the working life of coinage that would otherwise have been demonetized.

Gomes P5.10 is among the scarcer countermark types in the São Tomé series, partly because the host coins themselves varied in condition before punching.
