Portugal's mid-century colonial coinage for São Tomé and Príncipe was routinely sourced by countermarking existing stock rather than commissioning fresh strikes — a practical concession to the logistical difficulty of supplying remote Atlantic island territories. The small crown punch applied in 1854 reauthorized worn or surplus Portuguese metropolitan copper for continued local circulation, effectively extending the working life of coinage that would otherwise have been demonetized.
Gomes P5.10 is among the scarcer countermark types in the São Tomé series, partly because the host coins themselves varied in condition before punching.
