The shield is surmounted by the Portuguese royal crown. Floral and foliate ornaments flank the cartouche on either side. The circular legend around the periphery reads LUDOVICUS I · DEI GRATIA, inscribed in Latin along the milled border, identifying King Luís I by divine right. |
