Reverse description Central field bears the crowned Portuguese royal arms: a shield quartered with castles and the escutcheon of Portugal (five bezants arranged in cross form), set within an ornate baroque cartouche with scrolled acanthus mantling. The shield is surmounted by the Portuguese royal crown. Floral and foliate ornaments flank the cartouche on either side. The circular legend around the periphery reads LUDOVICUS I · DEI GRATIA, inscribed in Latin along the milled border, identifying King Luís I by divine right.
