Obverse description Central field displays the large numeral '20' in ornate script, surmounted by a prominent royal crown countermark — the so-called 'Big Crown' applied in 1871 to revalue the host coin to 40 Réis. The numeral is flanked and framed by elaborate foliate branches bearing leaves, berries, and floral rosettes. The date 1865 appears below the central numeral within the foliate design. The peripheral legend reads LUSITANORUM REX · PORTUGALE ET ALGARVE, inscribed in Latin along the milled border.
