Uruguay's Casa de Moneda in Montevideo attempted to establish a domestic gold coinage in the early 1850s, but chronic fiscal instability and dependence on Spanish colonial and foreign specie meant this pattern never advanced to regular issue. The 40 Reales denomination itself reflects the transitional currency arithmetic of the period — the real-based system was already being displaced across Latin America, and Uruguay would shift toward a peso-decimal structure within years of this piece being struck.
Fr#1 in Friedberg's gold census indicates this is the first recorded Uruguayan gold type — not by importance, but by catalogue sequence. Surviving examples are exceedingly rare, with most pedigrees traceable to a handful of nineteenth-century collections.
