| Obverse description | The full national coat of arms of Uruguay occupies the central field, depicting a quartered oval shield surmounted by a radiant rising sun; the upper quarters display scales of justice and a fortified hill with cannon, while the lower quarters show an ox and a horse. The shield is encircled by a rope border and flanked by crossed national flags, lances, and military trophies. The peripheral legend REPUBLICA ORIENTAL DEL URUGUAY curves along the upper rim in raised Latin letters, with the date 1854 prominent in the lower exergue below the trophy group. |

| Reverse description | The denomination 4.0 REALES is inscribed in two lines in large raised letters at the centre of the field, surrounded by a circle of twelve six-pointed stars. A decorative lozenge ornament appears immediately below the denomination. The entire central device is enclosed within a tied laurel and oak wreath. The circumferential legend LIBRE POR LA LEY arcs across the upper rim, while the mint initial Mo, fineness notation 135 Gs, and assayer initial Qs appear in the lower margin outside the wreath. |
