Obverse description The obverse is set against a pink guilloche underprint of intersecting diagonal lines and vertical striping. The denomination '40 Pfennig' appears in large bold Gothic numerals at the upper left and upper right corners, enclosed in ornamental brackets. The central inscription reads 'Notgeld der Gemeinde Westerhorn / Amtsbezirk Hörnerkirchen' in blackletter script, flanked by decorative foliate branches. Below, the validity clause 'Dieser Schein verliert seine Gültigkeit am 31. Dezember 1921.' is printed in Gothic script, followed by two manuscript signature lines above a stamped serial number in red, with the printer's imprint 'KONRAD HANF, HAMBURG 8' at the foot.

Reverse description The reverse is divided into two horizontal registers. The upper and larger field presents a central woodcut-style vignette enclosed in a ruled rectangular frame, portraying a bear and a wolf amid a dense woodland landscape with a body of water visible in the background; flanking the vignette on each side are vertical panels in red and black bearing stylised wave and foliate ornaments alongside the denomination '40 PF'. The lower register contains a pink-tinted text panel in a decorative surround with the Low German verse inscription in blackletter script.
