40 Para - Mahmud II type C, lozenge borders

The Regency of Tripoli operated as an Ottoman vassal under the Karamanli dynasty, and by 1808 Yusuf Karamanli was consolidating power following years of internal dynastic violence and the recently concluded First Barbary War with the United States. Local coinage issued in the name of Sultan Mahmud II served the practical function of asserting Ottoman suzerainty on the obverse while the Karamanlis retained effective autonomous control. The lozenge border distinguishes this type C variety from earlier issues and likely reflects a die engraver change at the Tripoli mint rather than any deliberate policy decision.
