| Obverse description | Frontal bust of Emperor Constans II wearing crown surmounted by a cross, depicted in highly stylized Byzantine fashion typical of the Syracuse mint. The emperor is shown facing, with a globus cruciger or chlamys suggested by the drapery at the shoulders. The legend MPER CONST appears partially around the periphery, representing a truncated form of IMPERATOR CONSTANTINUS. The flan is irregular and the strike is characteristic of seventh-century hammered provincial coinage, with the effigy rendered in a bold, somewhat crude style. |
