Comments

The 40 Markkaa denomination is peculiar by any standard — a value that reflects the awkward arithmetic of Finland's monetary transition rather than any organic commercial demand. When Finland introduced the markka in 1860, it was pegged at one quarter of the Russian ruble, and certain denominations were engineered to facilitate direct conversion rather than to serve intuitive everyday use. The 40 mark value maps cleanly onto 10 rubles.

Survivors are rare. The Bank of Finland's early issues saw limited distribution outside the major commercial centers, and the series was superseded quickly enough that most notes returned through banking channels before significant wear could accumulate.
