Rattenberg, on the Inn River in Tyrol, holds the distinction of being the smallest town in Austria — a fact that makes its wartime notgeld issues something of a curiosity. Like hundreds of Austrian municipalities during the coin shortage of the First World War, Rattenberg authorized small-denomination emergency paper to keep local commerce moving when metal disappeared from circulation.
