| Description du revers | The reverse is printed in brown and red on grey paper and carries a triptych vignette of local Rattenberg townscapes: at left, a view of historic buildings with a column or monument; at right, a medieval gate tower with surrounding structures; at centre, a red-ground panel bearing the bold numeral '40' above the word 'Heller', with the Tyrolean eagle coat of arms below. Red-and-white ribbon motifs frame the upper portion of the vignette. The issuer's name 'Stadt Rattenberg in Tirol' is inscribed in large Gothic script along the lower margin, with the printer's imprint 'Wagner Innsbruck' at lower left and the edition note 'II. Auflage' at right. |

Rattenberg — Austria's smallest town by area — issued this Heller Notgeld during the acute small-change shortage that gripped the Habsburg economy from 1914 onward. The municipal issues of Tirol are among the more locally flavored of the wartime Notgeld, printed regionally rather than sourced from Vienna, which gives the Wagner, Innsbruck imprint a certain documentary value for students of provincial Austrian printing history.
The 40 Heller denomination is one of the less common face values in the Rattenberg series.
