| Obverse description | The obverse is printed in black on cream paper with a red underprint numeral '40' at centre. A decorative border frames the note on all sides with foliate ornamental corners. The text 'Kassenschein über Vierzig Heller' is set in large Gothic blackletter type, below which a guarantee clause states the Stadtgemeinde Rattenberg in Tirol pledges redemption in legal tender backed by all its movable and immovable assets. Three manuscript signatures appear at the foot, attributed to the Vizebürgermeister, the Bürgermeister, and the Stadtkämmerer, with the validity date 'Giltig nur bis 31. Dez. 1920' printed in red along the lower margin. |

Rattenberg — Austria's smallest town by area — issued this Heller Notgeld during the acute small-change shortage that gripped the Habsburg economy from 1914 onward. The municipal issues of Tirol are among the more locally flavored of the wartime Notgeld, printed regionally rather than sourced from Vienna, which gives the Wagner, Innsbruck imprint a certain documentary value for students of provincial Austrian printing history.
The 40 Heller denomination is one of the less common face values in the Rattenberg series.
