Rückseitenbeschreibung The reverse presents a richly coloured panoramic vignette of Innsbruck's Maria-Theresien-Strasse, with the Annasäule column rising at centre and the snow-capped Nordkette massif filling the background; flanking decorative borders of stylised roses and foliage in pink and olive enclose the scene. The denomination '40' and 'H' appear in white numerals at upper left and upper right respectively, with a serial number printed in a light panel at the top centre. The issuer's name is inscribed in flowing Fraktur script along the lower margin, and the printer's imprint 'WAGNER, INNSBRUCK.' is noted at lower right.

Anmerkungen

Innsbruck Notgeld from 1920 falls into the second wave of Austrian emergency currency — by this point the Heller denominations were being produced less out of genuine coin shortage and more to satisfy the already-voracious collector market that had developed around Notgeld issues across the German-speaking world. The Notgeld-Sammlerbund, a collectors' association rather than a municipal or commercial authority, issued this piece explicitly for that trade. Wagner was a well-established Tyrolean printing firm with roots in commercial and ecclesiastical work.

The distinction matters: notes issued by a Sammlerbund were never intended as functional emergency currency.
