Haid bei Mauthausen is a small Upper Austrian commune whose Heller notgeld was issued during the severe coin shortage that gripped Austria from around 1919 onward, forcing hundreds of municipalities — many far smaller than any reasonable banking unit — to print their own fractional emergency currency. The 40 Heller denomination sits in the mid-range of the typical Gemeinde issue, neither the smallest nor the largest value in circulation.
Jaksch/Pick reference JPR0334II-40 places this within the second series for the commune. Whether a first series exists in materially different form is worth verifying before cataloging duplicates.
