Haid bei Mauthausen is a small Upper Austrian commune whose Heller notgeld was issued during the severe coin shortage that gripped Austria from around 1919 onward, forcing hundreds of municipalities — many far smaller than any reasonable banking unit — to print their own fractional emergency currency.
