Uruguay's early coinage history is tangled with provisional dependence on foreign-struck pieces and repeated failed attempts to establish a domestic currency. This 1854 trial was never approved for circulation — the young republic's monetary infrastructure wasn't yet capable of supporting regular issue, and the pattern was shelved without progressing to production.
At 41 grams in copper, it's a notably heavy piece for a fractional denomination, which may itself have contributed to its rejection.
