Uruguay's early republican coinage was struck not domestically but under contract in Europe, and this issue came from the Künker facilities — a consequence of the young republic lacking any mint infrastructure of its own. The 1857 series emerged during a period of relative political stabilization following decades of conflict between the Blancos and Colorados factions, though that stability proved short-lived.
The centésimo de real was itself an awkward transitional denomination, bridging Spanish colonial monetary conventions with the decimal reforms that would fully arrive with the peso system established in 1862.
