The upper portion bears the date inscription 'Uchwała d. 4ta 7bris 1794.' in letterpress, above the large central legend 'BILET SKARBOWY'. The 4 Złote Polskie belongs to the Kościuszko Uprising insurrection notes — emergency paper currency authorized by the revolutionary government in the desperate final months of Polish independence. The Dyrekcya Biletów Skarbowych was established specifically to finance the 1794 uprising against Russian and Prussian partition forces, making these notes instruments of armed resistance as much as monetary instruments.
Printed in Warsaw while the city was under siege conditions, the series required hand-applied seals and individual countersignatures, which is why no two examples are identical in their authentication marks. The uprising collapsed in November 1794, and Poland ceased to exist as a sovereign state for over a century following the Third Partition.
