Manuel Pinto de Fonseca served as Grand Master of the Order from 1741 until his death in 1773 — one of the longest reigns in the Order's Maltese period. By the 1750s, the Order's sovereign coinage was under quiet pressure: the Knights were operating a functioning mint at Valletta while simultaneously navigating diplomatic dependencies on both Rome and Versailles that complicated their monetary independence in practice if not in theory.
The 4 Tari denomination was the Order's principal silver workhorse, circulating alongside Spanish and Sicilian pieces that flooded the island through trade. KM#251 corresponds to a specific die period within Pinto's long reign rather than a single year's output.
