Claude de la Sengle held the Magistership for just four years before dying in office in 1557, making his coinage among the shorter-lived issues in the Hospitaller sequence. The Order's mint at Birgu — the fortified settlement the Knights occupied after their 1530 installation in Malta by Charles V — produced silver in a period of near-constant Ottoman pressure, culminating in the threat that would eventually materialize as the Great Siege of 1565, eight years after Sengle's death.
The brevity of the reign keeps surviving examples scarce relative to longer magistracies.
