Philip III of Portugal — Philip IV of Spain — issued this coin during a period when Goa's mint was operating under severe pressure from Dutch blockades that repeatedly disrupted the Estado da India's trade arteries. The "AM" privy mark denotes the assayer responsible for silver purity at a mint that sourced its metal largely from the same commercial networks the VOC was actively trying to strangle.
The date appearing on the obverse rather than the reverse is a minor but cataloguable distinction within the Filipe III Goa series, reflected in the Gomes classification.
