A vertical staff or cross divides the two figures. The surrounding Latin legend reads LEO LAVRED S M VENETI, identifying the Doge and invoking Saint Mark as patron of Venice. The overall design follows the established Venetian tradition of the so-called 'Doge and Saint Mark' type, rendered in the flat, incised style characteristic of hammered coinage of the early sixteenth century. |
