Obverse description Central field displays the crowned royal arms of the Spanish Habsburgs, featuring the quartered escutcheon of Castile and León with the pomegranate of Granada in base, surmounted by the royal crown. The mintmark and assayer's initial appear to the left of the shield, with the denomination mark IIII to the right. A partial circular legend in Latin surrounds the shield within a beaded border. As characteristic of cob coinage, the design is irregularly struck and the flan shows the typical rough, uneven edges of a macuquina piece.
Obverse script Latin
Obverse lettering PHILIPPVS , D , G , ISPANIARUM
