Obverse description Central field occupied by the quartered royal arms of Castile and León — alternating castles and lions in the upper and lower quarters — with Granada in base and a small escutcheon overall, the whole surmounted by an oval royal crown. The mint mark and assayer's initial appear to the right of the shield, with the denomination numeral partially visible to the left. The surrounding legend, partially legible due to the irregular flan typical of hammered coinage, reads PHILIPPVS II DEI GRATIA. The strike, characteristic of Valladolid production, displays bold relief on the central devices with weaker definition toward the periphery.
