Wiedenbrück, a small Westphalian town under the ecclesiastical authority of the Prince-Bishops of Paderborn, issued these copper pfennig pieces during a period when small-denomination coinage from regional authorities was chronically unreliable. The Holy Roman Empire's monetary system permitted — and in practice required — such municipal issues to fill the gap left by larger mints indifferent to the needs of local trade.
