Wiedenbrück, a small Westphalian town under the ecclesiastical authority of the Prince-Bishops of Paderborn, issued these copper pfennig pieces during a period when small-denomination coinage from regional authorities was chronically unreliable. The Holy Roman Empire's monetary system permitted — and in practice required — such municipal issues to fill the gap left by larger mints indifferent to the needs of local trade.
Kennepohl's cataloguing of Westphalian municipal copper remains the definitive reference for issues of this type. The six-year span of production suggests intermittent rather than continuous striking.
