The legend encircling the field reads AFRICA·PORTUGUEZA· with the date 1816 (or 1815 on earlier host pieces) and the denomination MACUTAS 2 arranged around the periphery. The rim is formed by a series of close-set milled dentils. The overall design reflects the neo-classical engraving style typical of early 19th-century Portuguese colonial coinage. |
