Obverse description The obverse displays the crowned Portuguese royal arms as a countermark applied to the reverse of the host coin, consisting of a shield bearing the Portuguese escutcheon surmounted by a royal crown. This Pedro V crowned shield countermark is boldly struck in the central field, partially overlapping the original design elements of the host coin. The countermark was applied in 1853 to revalue the host 2 Macutas piece to 4 Macutas for circulation in Portuguese Angola.
