The denomination currency mark LM appears to the left of the gate and the numeral 4 to the right, both superimposed on the flanking stone walls. The date 1976 is inscribed in the lower exergue, and the engraver's initials J.P. appear at the lower left. |

Fort Manoel was built by the Knights of St. John between 1723 and 1732 on Manoel Island, commissioned by Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena — whose name it bears — as a defensive work protecting Marsamxett Harbour. The British later used it as a quarantine station, a role it held through much of the 19th century, before serving as an important submarine base during World War II.
This coin belongs to Malta's early post-independence commemorative silver program, launched as the young republic worked to establish its numismatic identity following the 1964 separation from Britain. The .987 fineness is unusually high for a circulation-adjacent commemorative of this period.
