| Beschrijving keerzijde | A detailed frontal view of the ornate Baroque gateway of Fort Manoel occupies the central field, rendered in fine relief and depicting the arched entrance flanked by paired pilasters, surmounted by an elaborate pediment with scrollwork and iron grillwork above. The denomination currency mark LM appears to the left of the gate and the numeral 4 to the right, both superimposed on the flanking stone walls. The date 1976 is inscribed in the lower exergue, and the engraver's initials J.P. appear at the lower left. |

Fort Manoel was built by the Knights of St. John between 1723 and 1732 on Manoel Island, commissioned by Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena — whose name it bears — as a defensive work protecting Marsamxett Harbour. The British later used it as a quarantine station, a role it held through much of the 19th century, before serving as an important submarine base during World War II.
This coin belongs to Malta's early post-independence commemorative silver program, launched as the young republic worked to establish its numismatic identity following the 1964 separation from Britain. The .987 fineness is unusually high for a circulation-adjacent commemorative of this period.
